Take the Right Classes

  • Work with your school counselor to ensure that you are upholding NMPED graduation requirements using your

    NEXT STEP PLAN TEMPLATE 

  • Explore which Advanced Placement (AP) classes are available to you.

  • Attend a summer program if you need help with core academic skills.

  • Take the PSAT.

  • Ask your counselor about dual credit options

Connect College and Career Interests

  • Research colleges and universities online.

  • Explore what type of degree program you might enroll in and which schools offer programs to meet your needs.
  • Attend a summer program or camp.

  • Create a profile on COLLEGEBOARD.ORG and use their tools for college, career and scholarship searches.
  • Create a list of potential colleges you are interested in.

Build Support Systems

  • Find a mentor or a mentoring program.

  • Connect with students going through the college application process.

  • Talk with your family about your future plans.

Saving for College

  • Encourage your parents to open a 529 account at THEEDUCATIONPLAN.COM (see page 67).
  • Open a savings account.

  • Continue contributing to your 529 plan if you have already opened one.

  • Consider working a part time job and devoting part of your earnings to saving for college.

Reflect and Review

  • Meet with a counselor to make sure you are on track.

  • Continue building your STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROFILE, found on page 57, with involvement, athletic, leadership and volunteering roles.

  • Set goals for your academic and personal achievements in the second half of high school.
